Description
Thank you for viewing my artwork! This is a picture of a Polish Bison, in Pszczyna, Poland. This is one of two species of living bison remaining on earth. The other species is the American Bison (or the American Buffalo). European bison, Bison bonasus, were hunted to extinction in the wild, with the last wild animals being shot in the Bialowieza Forest in Eastern Poland. But, they have since been reintroduced from captivity into several countries in Europe, all descendants of the Bialowieza or lowland European bison.
The European bison is the heaviest surviving wild land animal in Europe and the weight can range from 660 to 2000 pounds. This bull weighs over 1300 pounds. The European Bison was first described by Carolus Linnaeus in 1758. While the American and European Bison may look similar, there are many physical differences. The European bison has 14 pairs of ribs, while the American Bison has 15. European bison tend to browse more while American bison tend to graze more. The body of the European bison is less hairy than the American Bison.

Lovely photograph. Fascinating! I didn't know there was a European species of bison. I am glad there is a reintroduction program for these magnificent animals.
